The Coromandel Peninsula on New Zealand's north island is a region which is as popular with New Zealanders as it is with international visitors. The region has an amazing array of beaches and stunning coastal topography which is cloaked in dense native forest. In addition to natural wonders the region is also has a colourful and rich history and culture that can be explored and discovered by the curious traveller. Artists and craftspeople have been drawn to the region to be inspired by its stunning natural beauty and relaxed friendly atmosphere. There are also several museums which explore the heritage of the region. It is an ideal destination for campervan hire New Zealand holiday makers.

The Coromandel is comprised of several small tourist towns which welcome visitors with open arms. Locals are keen to share all their knowledge of the area and show visitors as much of the natural wonder of the area as possible. Bush walkers will be delighted with the wide variety of trails the Coromandel has to offer. From short scenic coastal walkways through to several day hikes through rugged hilly terrain with stunning coastal views the variety and beauty of the region will leave you breathless.
While bush walking will allow you to see the parts of the coast line, nothing can surpass the view from the water. Boat charters are available but by far the best way to tour the coastline is by singing up for a kayaking tour.

Seabird Coast & Hauraki Plains

The journey from Auckland to the Coromandel passes through this scenic region which features some interesting places to stop along the way. The hot springs in the small town of Miranda are worth a look. Continuing on you will pass the Hauraki plains which was once a swamp land, but which now has been drained and is a productive dairy farm. Why not stop your campervan rental and detour for an ice cream cone along the way?

Thames & Thames Coast

Shortly after crossing the Waihou River, some 90 minutes after leaving Auckland, you will reach Thames. This is the main shopping precinct on the peninsula with a historic main street and range of shopping venues. Thames was once one of the largest towns in New Zealand, built upon the exploitation of the gold deposits and Kauri forests of the region.

Coromandel Town

The tranquil town of Coromandel is a haven for artists and craftspeople from all over New Zealand. The town boomed after the discovery of gold, as did the nearby town of Colville during the Kauri milling boom. However now both communities are quiet artistic and farming communities.

Whitianga & Mercury Bay

Visitors have been coming to this section of coastline since Maori explorer Kupe first settled here around 950 AD. It is now a well established tourist resort offering a range of fun holiday activities. The popular Hot Water Beach is located here as is the famed Cathederal Cove. These are "must see" destinations that you should not miss out on. Even if you only stay for one day in your campervan rental you will not be disappointed.

Tairua & Pauanui

These spectacular twin harbor towns make an ideal seaside holiday destination. With stunning natural topography and pristine islands located a little way off shore there are a wealth of holiday activities available to visitors.

Whangamata

This is one of New Zealands most famous gold mining towns which is still in production to this day. The town itself is full of character with old wooden buildings, white sandy beaches and a rustic laid back lifestyle with no shopping centres in sight. This is truly the best destination for those whose who enjoy the simple life.
